Beltre is free; Ortiz still in limbo
Adrian Beltre officially informed the Red Sox on Wednesday that, as expected, he will decline the $10 million player option he had for 2011. This means that the All-Star third baseman is now a free agent.
The Red Sox have until the end of Thursday — midnight on Friday to be exact — to pick up the $12.5 million club option for star slugger David Ortiz. By declining the option or not coming to an extenion before that deadline, Ortiz would be a free agent for the first time since the Twins released him after the 2002 season.
