Cliff Lee’s payday is coming

It is no secret that the Yankees are willing to dig deep to get Cliff Lee into pinstripes for next season and beyond, but the Boston Globe has a ballpark number for the contract the Bombers are thinking of right now – five years at approximately $115 to $120 million, the newspaper reported Sunday.

It is generally thought that no one will be able to outbid the Yankees for Lee – not even the Rangers, as team president Nolan Ryan acknowledged last week. That doesn’t necessarily mean Lee will decide to head to the Bronx, and his agent, Darek Braunecker, has said that he expects the process to go on a while longer. The Nationals are also thought to be interested.
Lee’s friend, CC Sabathia, squeezed an extra year out of the Yankees when his contract was being negotiated after the 2008 season. New York pounced out of the gate to deliver a six-year, $140 million deal to Sabathia, which eventually became a seven-year, $161 million pact that was agreed upon at the Winter Meetings.

I’m sorry but as good as Lee is… I wouldn’t give any pitcher more than $20 million a year! Especially for more than 5 yrs. There are many less instances of pitchers fullfilling the expectations of that kind of contract than those that did!

If baseball had a true hard salary cap no team would sign picther to that kinda money! But since there isn’t a cap in MLB just the luxury tax…Yankees have all the money in the world to spend!

Gee…wouldn’t it be swell if, just once, a multimillionaire athlete told his agent: “Look, chump…I’ve made you a rich man many times over. Shut up about the Yankees and stop trying to sell me on YOUR big payday! My wife hates that place, and I’m from Arkansas, buddy. You want to sell YOUR house? Go ahead! I’m staying in Texas where my wife and I like it just fine. Take the Rangers’ deal and count your money.”
