Six Clubs Contact Martin
Six clubs have expressed interest in free agent catcher Russell Martin, his agent said Friday. Matt Colleran said he hasn’t shut the door on the Dodgers, even though they non-tendered Martin Thursday night. General manager Ned Colletti said Martin could return to play the infield, outfield and catch. The two sides were $800,000 apart in guaranteed money. Martin, who made $5.05 million last season, is recovering from a broken hip and his offensive production has slipped the past two years. He was not willing to accept a cut in guaranteed salary. The Dodgers offered $4.2 million plus incentives. One of the clubs interested in Martin is believed to be the New York Yankees. According to the New York Times, the Yankees and Dodgers discussed a trade for catcher Francisco Cervelli before the deadline. – Ken Gurnick
