Yanks not shying from Crawford

As if the Yankees’ negotiations with Derek Jeter and Cliff Lee weren’t tantalizing enough.

According to an ESPN report on Friday, the Yankees are now making a play for free agent outfielder Carl Crawford — just in time for the Winter Meetings, which begin Monday in Florida.
New York is “sending out clear signals that it intends to make a bid for Crawford,” wrote Wallace Matthews and Andrew Marchand. But, whether the Yanks are doing so because they truly want Crawford isn’t so clear.

They could be looking for a measure of revenge on the Red Sox by attempting to inflate the price of Crawford, one of Boston’s free-agent targets, after the Red Sox reportedly did the same with Mariano Rivera

Or, the Yankees could be genuinely be interested in bolstering their outfield, currently composed of Brett Gardner, Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher.

It’s possible, too, that the Yankees could be pursuing Crawford to put some pressure on Lee, but ESPN reported that Lee remains the Yanks’ No. 1 target.
