The Washington Nationals have long been in pursuit of top free agents — remember their play for Mark Teixeira? — without success.
But it was Werth the wait — Jayson Werth, to be exact, who on Sunday came to terms on a seven-year contract.
The 31-year-old outfielder and agent Scott Boras had hoped to land a deal for five or six years, and Washington GM Mike Rizzo stepped up with a seventh season to make the quick agreement happen.
The Phillies — Werth’s club the last four seasons — Tigers, Rangers and Red Sox had also been interested in the eight-year veteran.
