July 25 news and notes: Greinke, Lee, Headley

Now that the Phillies have locked up southpaw Cole Hamels to a six-year, $144 million deal, Milwaukee’s Zack Greinke appears to be the pitcher drawing the most widespread interest. The Braves thought they were closing in on Cubs right-hander Ryan Dempster, but the 35-year-old would prefer to go to the Dodgers and, with his ability to veto any trade, he has stalled to see if the Dodgers, his preferred destination, make Chicago a better offer. Well, Atlanta is tired of waiting around and general manager Frank Wren says the club has moved on. Our own Mark Bowman provides the details on the Braves’ pursuit of Greinke. The Rangers and Angels are among other teams reportedly interested in Greinke’s services.

Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano, who has 19 home runs in 70 games since May 1, could interest a number of teams, including the Dodgers, Giants and Indians, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com. Soriano, 36, is signed through the 2014 season, with an annual salary of $14 million for each of the next two years.

Morosi and Ken Rosenthal also ponder whether the Phillies will make lefty Cliff Lee available now that they have Hamels in the fold for the foreseeable future. Lee, 33, has three years and $87.5 million remaining on his contract after this season.

The Padres will more than likely deal third baseman Chase Headley prior to Tuesday’s non-waiver Trade Deadline, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Heyman reports that as many as 10 teams have checked in on Headley, including the Orioles, Indians, A’s and Pirates. The 28-year-old switch-hitter hit his 12th home run of the season in the first inning of Wednesday’s contest against the Giants.
