D-backs sign Camp, release Hinske

The D-backs made a move to increase their bullpen depth on Thursday, signing right-hander Shawn Camp and assigning him to Triple-A Reno.  Camp was released by the Cubs on July 7 after being designated for assignment.

The 37-year-old is a 10-year veteran who posted a 7.04 ERA in 26 appearances this season. In 23 innings, he struck out 13 and walked nine. Camp was a workhorse for Chicago least season, when he appeared in a league-high 80 games and produced  a 3.59 ERA.

Arizona also released veteran pinch-hitting specialist Eric Hinske, who recently accepted an outright assignment to Reno after being designated for assignment. Hinske was 1-for-18 with Reno and hit .173 with one home run in 58 plate appearances for Arizona, which signed him this offseason.

Hinske, the 2002 American League Rookie of the Year with the Blue Jays, is expected to retire, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal. He played for seven teams over 12 big league seasons, hitting .249/.332/.430 with 137 home runs and 522 RBIs. The 35-year-old also accomplished the strange feat of appearing in three consecutive World Series with three different teams, winning with the Red Sox in 2007, losing with the Rays in ’08 and winning with the Yankees in ’09.
