Tigers working to sign reliever Joba Chamberlain
The Tigers are adding to their bullpen by working on a deal with right-hander Joba Chamberlain, multiple news outlets have reported on Thursday. FOX Sports‘ Ken Rosenthal had the news first.
MLB.com‘s Jason Beck has confirmed that it’s a one-year deal.
The injury-prone and inconsistent fireballer has undisputed talent, but it’s a question of whether the Tigers can harness the 28-year-old’s gifts and turn him into an effective back-end bullpen piece.
He was strong in 2011, posting a 2.83 ERA in 27 appearances for the Yankees before undergoing Tommy John Surgery in June of that year, but his ERA inflated to 4.35 in 2012 and 4.93 in 2013.
