Report: Martin signs with the Blue Jays

The Blue Jays emerged as the winner in the Russell Martin sweepstakes, reportedly signing the catcher to a five-year, $82 million deal on Monday.

Far and away the top catcher on this year’s market, Martin ultimately landed a deal just shy of the five-year, $85 million contract signed last offseason by catcher Brian McCann.

The Blue Jays had seemingly taken a backseat to the Cubs as recently as Sunday night, but Toronto ramped up its pursuit Monday and sealed the deal. The Dodgers had also been mentioned as a potential favorite to sign Martin at various points over the past couple weeks.

The Jays had Martin as one of their biggest targets this offseason and have seemingly now found their starting catcher and middle-of-the-order bat for years to come. Martin hit .290/.402/.430 with 11 home runs and 67 RBIs over 111 games with the Pirates last season.
