Masterson reportedly garnering heavy interest
At least six teams have actively inquired about or sought medical information on free agent right-hander Justin Masterson, according to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick.
The Twins, Red Sox, Braves, Royals, Cubs and Giants have all expressed some interest in Masterson, as has his former club in Cleveland.
Heading into the offseason, it was believed that Masterson would likely land a one- or two-year deal this winter. Given the amount of apparent interest, the latter certainly seems most likely now.
Although Masterson struggled through an injury-plagued 2014 campaign in which he went just 7-9 with a 5.88 ERA, he remains a strong bounceback candidate. After all, Masterson is only one season removed from going 14-10 with a 3.45 ERA and a Major League-best three shutouts.
He also pitched at least 180 innings each season from 2010-13, averaging 199 per year, before running into some injury problems this past year. The team that ultimately signs Masterson will certainly be taking a risk, but his bounceback potential will certainly make him an appealing name as the market continues to develop.
