Athletics Have Something Brewing
After stealing headlines with a pair of blockbuster trades last season, the Athletics may once again have another big deal in the work.
The A’s landed Jeff Samardzija and Jon Lester in major trades last season and reports are surfacing that the club may make another major move in the near future.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the A’s are “close to a fairly significant deal that involves Jeff Samardzija.”
However, FOX Sports has since refuted that report and said the trade does not involve Samardzija.
FOX Sports also reported that the A’s are working on multiple trades, which may account for some of the initial confusion.
Sources have also told MLB.com the trade does not involve Brandon Moss. General manager Billy Beane said earlier this month that he was not interested in trading any of his younger players so Sonny Gray and Josh Donaldson, in addition to Moss, are likely staying put.
While the players involved in the trade are still to be determined, it does look like Oakland has something in the works.
The A’s signed free agent Billy Butler to a three-year $30 million deal on November 19 and could be looking to add even more offensive through the trade market.
If Samardzija, who went 5-6 with a 3.14 ERA in 16 starts with the Athletics, is not involved in either of the trades then the A’s may be looking to part ways with left Scott Kazmir.
