Red Sox, Padres have discussed Cespedes, Kennedy swap
The Red Sox and Padres have reportedly talked about a potential trade that would send Yoenis Cespedes to San Diego in exchange for right-hander Ian Kennedy, according to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.
Boston is hesitant to pull the trigger for the time being, however, as the Sox believe that dealing Cespedes could ultimately bring in an even better pitcher in return. That said, the Red Sox could certainly circle back to this offer if they can’t find a better deal in the near future.
At this point, a Cespedes trade seems inevitable, given the Red Sox abundance of outfielders on their current roster. As for the Padres, it’s no secret that they’ve been looking to upgrade offensively this offseason, though they’ve already missed out in their pursuit of a number of top free agents.
This potential deal will likely be put on the backburner while the Red Sox continue to field offers, but it’s a situation worth monitoring.
