A’s trade Samardzija to White Sox

The A’s have reportedly agreed to a deal sending pitcher Jeff Samardzija to the Chicago White Sox, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.

The White Sox emerged as the leading candidate earlier Monday, according to a report from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. Samardzija, 29, spent the first six-and-a-half seasons of his career in Chicago, pitching for the Cubs, and grew up not far from the Windy City in Valparaiso, Ind.

Though it’s not yet clear what Chicago offered in exchange, the club has several young infielders who could appeal to Oakland, such as Marcus Semien or Tim Anderson.

Samardzija, who is slated to enter free agency after the 2015 season, would provide the White Sox with a top right-hander to pair with lefties Chris Sale, Jose Quintana and John Danks. He went 7-13 with a 2.99 ERA through 33 starts (219 2/3 innings) with the Cubs and A’s in 2014.
