Cubs looking to deal Castillo
After spending much of the offseason trying to make improvements at catcher, the Cubs completed that task on Tuesday, finalizing a trade to acquire Miguel Montero from the D-backs in exchange for a pair of minor league pitchers, Jeferson Mejia and Zach Godley.
Chicago was one of the front runners in the bidding for Russell Martin earlier this offseason before he decided to sign with Toronto.
With Montero, a two-time All-Star, ready to assume the bulk of catching duties the Cubs are now likely to deal last year’s starting catcher, Wellington Castillo. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reported in a tweet that Chicago began exploring other deals to trade Castillo while chasing Martin. Those talks were put on hold after the Cubs lost out on Martin.
Castillo is a career .256 hitter and batted .237 last season with 13 home runs and 46 RBIs.
