Giants join in on Hamels pursuit

All three teams that came up short in their pursuit of Jon Lester are now considering a trade for Cole Hamels, with ESPN’s Jayson Stark reporting that the Giants have also joined the discussions. The Red Sox and Dodgers had already expressed interest in Hamels even before Lester decided to sign with the Cubs.

This is the main reason why the Phillies waited for Lester to sign with a team before committing to any potential deal involving Hamels. They now have three potential contenders all interested in Hamels — an ideal situation for ultimately bringing back the best possible return.

As with much of the starting pitching market, talks figure to develop quickly with Lester now off the board. That said, the Phillies have no timetable in place for moving Hamels and remain focused only on finding the best deal.

If they get the same return for Hamels as they did for Pence forget the Giants.

I find it unlikely that Philly will be interested in Cespedes. I think they’ll want players under long term financial control. If the Sox can make a trade for Hamels, maybe they can use Cespedes for another involving one of those year rental dudes. I wouldn’t mind getting Hamels and Cueto, say. Especially if Cueto could be convinced to hang around for a few more years. Christmas is coming, after all.
