Report: Lester signs with the Cubs
The Jon Lester sweepstakes have come to an end, and the Cubs have emerged as the winner.
Lester has reportedly signed a six-year, $155 million deal with Chicago, the largest in franchise history, according to multiple reports. Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal was the first to break the news early Wednesday morning.
The club has not yet confirmed the signing, but a source told MLB.com’s Ian Browne that the deal is complete.
The 30-year-old lefty selected the Cubs over the Red Sox, his former club, and the Giants, whom he informed Tuesday evening that he would not be signing with them. The Dodgers were also reportedly in the mix.
Chicago will be the third stop in Lester’s big league career. He spent his first eight-and-a-half seasons with Boston before being traded to Oakland at the deadline last July. He went 16-11 with a career-best 2.46 ERA in 2014.
