Orioles interested in Padres outfielders Venable, Smith
The Orioles’ search for an outfielder could take them to the Padres, who have a surplus at the position after a series of recent moves to acquire Matt Kemp, Justin Upton and Wil Myers. San Diego also has outfielders Seth Smith, Will Venable and Carlos Quentin currently on its roster.
It’s no secret that the Padres will try to move at least one of the aforementioned players this offseason and Baltimore reportedly has interest in both Smith and Venable, according to Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun.
The Orioles obviously have a need for another outfielder after Nick Markakis departed for Atlanta and Nelson Cruz signed with the Mariners earlier this offseason. Though the club reportedly re-signed Delmon Young on Wednesday, he figures to again split time between the DH spot and left field.
As for the Padres duo garnering interest from the O’s, Smith is under contract through 2016 with a club option for ’17, while Venable is eligible to hit free agency following next season. Both players are left-handed hitters, meaning either one could provide balance playing alongside right-handed slugger Adam Jones.
