Overnight Rumor Mill Roundup

* FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal says the Reds’ Trade Deadline plans remain something of an enigma, but a top of the order bat or run producer —  or both — are on Cincinnati’s radar.

But a bat may not be the only object of the Reds’ desire. FOX Sports’ John Paul Morosi tweeted that Cincinnati recently scouted Mariners starters Jason Vargas and Doug Fister when the Mariners were in Toronto.

* With Rays prospect Desmond Jennings recalled on Friday, ESPN’s Buster Olney believes B.J. Upton is on his way out of town.

* The catching market may be thin, but reports Mets catcher Ronny Paulino has received interest from a number of teams.

* Morosi reports that the Pirates and Indians have looked into Rockies catcher Chris Iannetta. Iannetta is signed through 2012 with an option for 2013.

7/17 – Overnight Rumor Mill Roundup

* FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports that the Phillies are not looking to add more than $2 million in payroll at the deadline. Despite the relatively modest figure compared to the Phillies’ payroll, Rosenthal reports that may be enough to add Padres’ reliever Mike Adams or Royals outfielder Jeff Francoeur.

* Rosenthal also reports that Adams is on the Yankees and Rangers radars, in addition to other clubs.

* John Paul Morosi of FOX Sports details that the Tigers would like to add another arm to their rotation, and have expressed interest in the Braves’ Derek Lowe

* Morosi also reports that the Royals may be looking to move the suddenly expendable Wilson Betemit and the resurgent Melky Cabrera (.293, 11 HR, 52 RBI).

* Lastly, Rosenthal reports that the Yankees, Tigers and Reds may be the leaders for Rockies right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez, and that Rays’ center fielder B.J. Upton may be of interest to the Phillies, Braves and Nationals.

* However, Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that Jimenez could come with a significant price tag.

“We would have to be absolutely overwhelmed,” Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd told the Denver Post. “It would have to be a Herschel Walker deal.”

* The New York Daily News reports that Carlos Beltran has heard all the trade rumors, but has told Mets management he’d like to finish his career in New York.

Meanwhile, the New York Post reports that the Mets may be willing to pay up to $6 million of the remainder of Beltran’s contract which expires this year.

* There is still no timetable for Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz’ s return, but the Boston Herald reports that GM Theo Epstein is unlikely to respond by adding a starter prior to the deadline.

* Edwin Jackson apparently picked a good day to toss a complete game shutout. The Chicago Tribune reports that the White Sox right-hander blanked the Tigers in front of scouts from the Cardinals, Brewers and Red Sox on Saturday.
