7/20 Cubs’ GM looks to future

Cubs GM Jim Hendry told the Des Moines Register on Tuesday he’s open to making changes to help the team in the future but doesn’t see a need to overhaul the roster.  He was in Des Moines to watch the Triple-A Iowa team play for three games.

“Why would we trade anybody who we think is going to help us next year or the years after?” he said Tuesday.

“I would say if we move anyone it would be somebody we clearly knew wouldn’t be back,” Hendry said. “We’re not going to move people that we think are going to help us.”

There’s no pressure to dump payroll via trade, he said. Hendry added he already has rejected several potential deals.

“Why would I trade Sean Marshall?” he said. “Why would I trade Darwin Barney? Those calls kind of stop quickly. It makes no sense.”

The GM hasn’t changed his approach this season compared to past seasons.

“I haven’t changed any since we won 97 games in 2008,” he said. “I’ve worked just as hard.”

12/17 Wood, Hendry & pizza

Cubs GM Jim Hendry and Kerry Wood may have finalized their agreement over pizza at a charity event one week ago in Chicago. Both attended Ryan Dempster’s fundraiser at D’Agostino’s, a restaurant near Wrigley Field, and had a chance to chat. The two had also attended Ron Santo’s funeral earlier in the day. Wood, whom the Cubs selected in the first round of the 1995 Draft, has made Chicago his offseason home, and ignored other multi-year deals so he could do what’s best for his family. He has reportedly agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Cubs, who needed an experienced right-handed set-up pitcher. It’s not exactly Andre Dawson handing the team a blank check, which the Hall of Famer did prior to the 1987 season, but it’s close. Expect an official announcement Friday re: Wood.

12/8 Cubs rumors: Gorzo to Tigers?

Cubs GM Jim Hendry has been in “inquirer mode” this week, checking out ways to improve the team. There are reports that he has met with the Rays about right-hander Matt Garza, who was 15-10 with 3.91 ERA in 32 starts. Hendry also has reportedly talked to the Tigers about trading lefty Tom Gorzelanny for right-hander Armando Galarragga, who was 4-9 with a 4.49 ERA last season and had the near no-hitter.

Cubs, Pena may be close

The Cubs may have found their next first baseman in Carlos Pena. GM Jim Hendry continued discussions at the Winter Meetings with representatives for the free agent, and the team expected to hear more Wednesday. A source told the two sides had finalized a one-year contract but a team official said it was too early to say the deal was done.

Pena’s batting average has dropped each of the last four seasons but he is averaging 36 homers and 100 RBIs in that span. He also ranks among the elite fielding first baseman, which would benefit the Cubs, who have been spoiled with Gold Glove winner Derrek Lee at first for the last seven seasons. Lee was traded to the Braves in August.
