Rockies interested in Marshall?

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reported Tuesday that the Rockies were aggressively pursuing trade talks with the Reds about lefty reliever Sean Marshall. But, the report also noted that talks have since cooled over concerns about Marshall’s health.

Marshall is 31 and has two years and $12 million remaining on his contract. Because of shoulder issues, he was limited to only 16 appearances last season. Therefore, the Rockies’ apparent concerns would be legitimate.

It was not known who the Reds might want in return for Marshall. On Monday, GM Walt Jocketty indicated the only way the Reds could any big deals would be to shift some payroll out. Marshall wouldn’t be a huge enough move to sign Shin-Soo Choo but maybe it would help add someone else. On the other hand, having two lefties in the bullpen with Marshall and Manny Parra is a nice asset to have.

Marshall for Wood nearly done?

The Reds appeared close Wednesday to completing a trade that would land left-handed reliever Sean Marshall from the Cubs in exchange for young lefty starter Travis Wood and two Minor Leaguers.

According to ESPNChicago.com, the deal was agreed to pending physicals. A source confirmed the Reds’ interest in Marshall to MLB.com, but did not expect the trade to be consummated on Wednesday.

Cincinnati currently has a vacancy for the closer’s role, but are looking at Marshall as a lefty set-up man.

12/21 Possible Cubs-Reds swap?

The Cubs and Reds are reportedly close to a trade which would send reliever Sean Marshall to the Reds for starter Travis Wood and two Minor Leaguers. FOX Sports and ESPN.com are both reporting the possible deal. Wood, 24, was 6-6 with a 4.84 ERA in 2 games, including 18 starts last season. He became expendable after the Reds acquired Mat Latos from the Padres. Marshall, 29, has been one of the top left-handed relievers in baseball the last two seasons, posting a 2.26 ERA over 75 2/3 innings in 2011.

7/20 Cubs’ GM looks to future

Cubs GM Jim Hendry told the Des Moines Register on Tuesday he’s open to making changes to help the team in the future but doesn’t see a need to overhaul the roster.  He was in Des Moines to watch the Triple-A Iowa team play for three games.

“Why would we trade anybody who we think is going to help us next year or the years after?” he said Tuesday.

“I would say if we move anyone it would be somebody we clearly knew wouldn’t be back,” Hendry said. “We’re not going to move people that we think are going to help us.”

There’s no pressure to dump payroll via trade, he said. Hendry added he already has rejected several potential deals.

“Why would I trade Sean Marshall?” he said. “Why would I trade Darwin Barney? Those calls kind of stop quickly. It makes no sense.”

The GM hasn’t changed his approach this season compared to past seasons.

“I haven’t changed any since we won 97 games in 2008,” he said. “I’ve worked just as hard.”
